Amsterdam City Government Overview
MAYOR
Eberhard Edzard van der Laan (born June 28, 1955) is a Dutch politician of the Labour Party (PvdA). He has been the Mayor of Amsterdam since July 7, 2010. Before serving as Mayor he was Minister of Integration and Housing in the Cabinet Balkenende IV succeeding the sacked Ella Vogelaar. He resigned with the rest of the Labour Party cabinet members on February 23, 2010.
In 1983 Van der Laan graduated in law cum laude at the Vrije Universiteit. He co-founded the legal firm Kennedy Van der Laan.
He started his political career as assistant to the Amsterdam alderman Jan Schaefer. Between 1990 and 1998 he was member of the Amsterdam city council, from 1993 as the chair of the Labour Party group. After leaving politics he became a full-time lawyer.
CITY COUNCIL
The new Amsterdam bench of Alderman was inaugurated on 19 May 2010 during a city council meeting. The new bench comprises members of three political parties: the VVD (People's Party for Freedom and Democracy), GroenLinks (Green Left) and the PvdA (Dutch Labour Party).
