Amsterdam chief rabbi suspended for gay stance

The Orthodox Jewish community of Amsterdam suspended its US-born chief rabbi on Tuesday for cosigning a declaration which said homosexuality was a “treatable” inclination.
Rabbi Aryeh Ralbag told The Jerusalem Post on Wednesday that he found it “scandalous that a chief rabbi cannot state the Torah viewpoint for his community without being penalized.”
ING cuts target, no dividend until aid repaid

Amsterdam shuts down most of Occupy camp

Amsterdam police say they arrested 14 protestors during an operation to remove some of the tents belonging to the Occupy Beursplein movement.
On Tuesday, the Amsterdam authorities told the Occupy activists that they had until Thursday morning to give 75 percent of the Beursplein back to ‘ordinary Amsterdammers’ and improve the fire safety, sanitary and hygiene measures throughout the rest of the protest camp.
Experts reclassify painting as real Rembrandt

Experts have reclassified a painting as a Rembrandt after years of attributing it to one of the Dutch master’s students.
Ernst van de Wetering of the Rembrandt Research Project said Friday that X-ray analysis of “Bearded Old Man” has revealed outlines of a self-portrait of Rembrandt as a young man underneath. More >

Man charged after alleged theft at Kohl’s in Amsterdam

An Amsterdam man has been arrested following the alleged theft of about $500 in merchandise from the Kohl’s store on Route 30.
The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office responded responded to a robbery complaint at the Kohl’s in the town of Amsterdam. Sheriff’s deputies and Amsterdam police were able to obtain surveillance video of an incident in which a customer was confronted by store personnel while leaving the store without paying for merchandise. A physical struggle ensued, and the suspect left the store. More >
TNT Express warns on profits as demand sags

Dutch freight and delivery firm TNT Express issued a profit warning on Thursday as the global economic slowdown led more customers to snub air transport in favour of cheaper shipping.
TNT Express, which listed in May after it split from Dutch mail group PostNL , cut its 2011 outlook and said it saw revenue pressure in Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA) in the third quarter as well as weaker demand in Asia.
